Blinds, of all types, are the most popular means of interior shading for buildings of all sorts, from residences and apartments to professional establishments and shops.

Still, there are many out there who degrade their aesthetic value and lower their operational life by cleaning them the wrong way. Below, you will find instructions on how to clean and maintain their blinds in the best possible conditions.

What You Must NEVER Do While Cleaning you Blinds:

At first, let us straighten out what we should and should not do when we wish to clean any type of blinds:

  • Never immerse them under water - there is a chance for their metallic mechanisms to rust.
  • Never use a vac without the special nozzle with the brush; otherwise, you may scratch their surface!
  • Never wash textile blinds in the washing machine: In time, it will harm the delicate finish of the fabric. Dre cleaning is a much preferable option.

Having seen all the “don’ts”, let us now move what it is allowed to do while cleaning your blinds.

1. How to Clean your Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds made from aluminium magnetise the dust in great quantities. Hence, use a microfibre cloth or even a cotton sock! Place your hand inside, and you clean them in no time!

  • Immerse under warm water mixed with some sort of detergent solution (just make sure it doesn’t have any substances that cause skin irritations), and then wring it very well.
  • Place it in your hand and start downwards, cleaning every blind on both sides simultaneously. Note though that you should never use this technique for wooden Venetian Blinds since their porous material will be stained by unaesthetic blots. Instead, try the following:
  • Toss a few drops of detergent in hot water and a spoonful of baking soda.
  • Wet a microfibre cloth and wring it well.
  • Clean every blind carefully. Don’t press it against the surface too much.
  • As soon as you are done, leave the open to dry quickly.

2. How to Clean your Roman Blinds

The folded material of the Roman blinds easily attracts dust and gets stained.

To clean them up, just use a vacuum cleaner with a flatted nozzle.

Stains and blots need particular caution. If it is permitted by the label instructions, use a damp cloth with very little stain detergent to remove them. Don’t over-rub it! You may damage the material or discolour it, making the rest of its surface look dirty.

If your Roman blinds are heavily stained, better take them to the dry cleaner’s.

3. Keeping your Vertical Blinds Clean

Vertical blinds require the least maintenance time since they don’t accumulate dust and dirt quickly. A sweep with a damp cloth once in a while should be enough. Their mechanism needs a bit rubbing, along with the mounting frame.

  • Just remove one of the vertical blinds and sweep it with a damp cloth.
  • It would be nice to lubricate the mechanism twice a year with silicon spray to keep it in excellent condition and avoid annoying squeaking sounds and clamps while using it.
