When minimalism first appeared as an interior decoration trend, it didn’t get the reception it deserved. Many found it “shabby”, “colourless”, or even “boring”. Soon though minimalism stole the hearts and minds of all, even of its critics.

Its distinguishing feature? Less is best. Just choose carefully what you will keep, and discern wisely between necessity and excess.

Its advantages? More space, more air, easier tidying up, zero disorder, more free time, easier changes in the room’s style and overall character.

What many don’t get is that, despite its simplicity, the minimalistic decor has certain rules and guiding principles. It involves more than just “getting rid” of stuff. Below, you will find the 4 basic secrets for a successful minimalistic decoration!

  1. Space

As already mentioned, a minimalistic space should look spacious and comfortable, despite its real size. How? Don’t cover the floor with many carpets and leave the walls, as much as possible, uncovered, allowing their basic colour to come out. On the other hand, in some key points, add a picture or another decorative element, to avoid a cold and inhospitable look.

       2. Colours

Minimalistic decoration loves white and all its hues. Besides its inherent simplicity, white matches everything, from romantic pale hues to intense chromatic contrasts, such as maroon or black.

Naturally, this doesn’t mean you can pick a different colour for your basic motif. The secret is not to mix up too many colours. Use no more than two colours, opting for naturalearthy colours.

      3. Light Furniture

Minimalism loves brightmodern furniture and their clear-cut design and functionality. Prefer parallelogram design and matching furniture, avoiding complicated glyphs and fiorituras.

Do the same while picking covers and shading systems. RollersRomans and Zebra/Combi blinds are by far the best minimalistic options, but you can also find curtains of the same vein. Obviously, you need a self-coloured curtain, made from lightweight, gossamer fabric.

      4. Mind the Accessories

Minimalism doesn’t forbid the use of secondary minimalistic elements. Just make sure you choose them carefully.

What matters here is not their size, but their number. Simply put, opt for fewer decorative elements, instead of several small ones - even if they require less space. For instance, a big picture featuring a modern, simple theme is much preferable to a 5 or 6 ones scattered in the exact same wall.

Should you wish a touch of nature in the room, make simplicity your guide. Avoid flower-pots and colourful bouquets. Prefer of green plants with wide leaves or cactuses. Again, it is not the size that matters, but their number, which has to remain a small one.
